Lynda Thompson, Ph.D., is director of the addcentre.com
in Mississauga, Ontario, near Toronto. The ADD Centre is one of the largest neurofeedback facilities in Canada. She offers Neurofeedback workshops that prepare attendees for BCIA Neurofeedback certification in June and September, near Toronto.

Neurofeedback is exercise for the brain. It involves operant conditioning-- rewarding behavior-- brain wave frequency so it happens again.

BCIA Biofeedback Certification Institute of America

Works at creating brighter brains-- IQ increases averaging 12 points for ADD, 9 for Aspergers.

Has seen over 150 cases of aspergers. Measures progress and success looking at functioning better in everday life.

"When you pay attention better that's a substrate for almost everything you do in life."

Points out that canadian Olympic athletes like Alexander Bilodeau did great, had 40 hours of neurofeedback and biofeedback training as part of the Canadian "Own the Podium" program.
Â

Approach to neurofeedback: Use assessment to indvidualize training .

She and her psychiatrist husband Michael have developed the Thompson Scripts and Screen for Thought Technology Biograph INfiniti software, for ADD, Depression, Optimal Performance.

Assessment includes TOVA, IVA, history, diet, sleep, exercise.

"Common sense is not always common practice."

Usual assessment in 80% of cases is a single sensor assessment at vertex/CZ. For attention and optimal performance, this is what they usually use.

They also use "full cap" qEEG 19 channel assesment for head injury, complex learning disabilities... for coherence training, for TBI (traumatic brain injury.)

Her son, James Thompson, a second generation neurofeedback researcher and practitioner, with colleague David Hagedorn, has developed a portable system for assessment and treatment of
TBI, called C.O.M.B.A.T. combined brain assessment and intervention training. It can be taken to the battle zone or the sports locker room.

With a 19 channel full cap assessment, you can use databases like Thatcher's neuroguide, which has a traumatic brain index that lets you track progress. This helps when working with insurers to show that clients are continuing to make progress.

She uses three brain mappers:
- a neuronavigator Brain mapper, using software designed by Barry Sterman with hardware from J&J,
-Neuropulse
-Mitsar, her newest acquisition, which has a database for not only EEG but also ERP (event related evoked potentials)-- shows time-locked brain response to a stimulus. P-300 is slower in children with ADD. Some extraordinary.

Working with Autistic Spectrum Disorder-- have seen nine point IQ increases, improved social skills.
The anterior cingulate is the emotional brain. And then, mirror neurons are less active in Autistic spectrum clients.
Part of the EEG training helps kids learn to pick on on social cues, allows them to more smoothly manage interaction.

Autistic spectrum children always have anxiety. They train "busy brain" frequencies and people get calmer. The goal is to let them feel calm and safe.

Self Regulation: If you can self regulate... then you're going to be a powerful person.

ADD and Epilepsy-- there are lots of controlled follow up research on the use of neurofeedback in helping these.

People with seizure disorders use neurofeedback to become seizure free. People whose seizures are not well controlled with medication respond to neurofeedback with 75 to 80% success.

Autism Case Examples:
13 year old boy in MID (Mild intellectual disability) at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, the largest childrens' hospital parents were told that there was nothing to be done but family counseling to cope with the situation.
With neurofeedback, he went from sitting giggling and flapping arms to calm, started being communicative. He went to regular class in high school, took advanced math classes. seven year followup he is now at a university, working toward an actuarial degree.

12 year old developing language-- went from zero to 200 word vocabulary.

Combining biofeedback and neurofeedback-- is the way of the future. That's what was done with the Canadian Olympic athletes and what we do with all our clients.
Favorite peripheral (non-neurofeedback) modality is HRV (see here and here) She uses Thought Technology's HRV hardware and software as part of her Biograph Infiniti system.

HRV-- Heart Rate Variability-- is influenced by the Vagus nerve, which is calming. You estabilsh person's resonant frequency for breathing.Â
HRV is part of the Thompson Suites-- software add-ons for the Thought Technology infiniti systems.

The future of health:
True health maintenance and health promotion has to be the way of the future.

She predicts that a pharmaceutical company will acquire a biofeedback company.

NEW
At the University of Salzberg they are training SMR (sensorimotor rhythm) to improve memory.

Sterman studied SMR biofeedback in the 60's for Epilepsy.

Increased sleep spindle density seems to correlate with memory improvement.
Dominant peak alpha frequency starts to decline with dementia. If adult alpha is below 8, that's a sign of pathology. Alpha can go down to 4 hz.

She notes that Tom Budzynski, facing choice of heart surgery or medication, found that his alpha frequency dropped on medication. So he went for surgery and Alpha went up.

We talked about how after all these years, biofeedback is still not well integrated into health care. She suggests that demand by patients is what will bring about greater adoption-- bottom up change.

She notes that Hockey goalies tend to be ADD or asperers.

Our education system is not keeping up, not educating people for this new world.

One theme has run through my work for the past 40 plus years-- a desire to play a role in waking people up, raising their consciousness and empowering them. I was the organizer founder of the Winter Brain, Optimal Functioning and Positive Psychology and StoryCon Meetings and president of Futurehealth, Inc., with interests in (more...)
